Since graduating from Rockhurst in 2017, my interest has always been in providing speech, language, and auditory-based services to children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I have built a deep connection to this population through personal experiences and academic coursework. I have witnessed the pure excitement of a child with a cochlear implant respond to their name for the first time, and continue on to make linguistic gains in both English and Sign. These experiences inspired me to want to be a voice, an advocate, and a trusting figure to children who are emerging into a radically different world full of sounds, new social rules, and potentially physio-emotional challenges.
I chose Fontbonne University because it allowed me the unique opportunity to advance my interest within this population. Being a IPEI Grant Scholar with an emphasis in Early Intervention Services to Young Children Who Are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and their Families (H325K170008) has provided me with the educational and clinical background to increase my competencies in service delivery for children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and their families.
