Abstract

In this thesis I tried to show that mathematics has a definite and important place in the field of economics. In order to illustrate this place, I presented both examples of mathematical economic formulations and critiques regarding the use of such formulations. The examples which I used gave only a brief glimpse of this broad field of mathematical economics. In closing I would just like to add that my purpose was not to set mathematics up on a pedestal, but rather to show how the two fields, mathematics and economics, can be brought together for the mutual fulfillment of each.
