Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to show the many and varied contributions of mathematicians to the solution of the Diophantine Equation. Because of the complicated equations needed, Diophantus developed syncopated algebra what was used up to teh fifteenth century in Europe. A translation of Diophantus's work caught Fermat's interest which he soon developed into number theory. Today the study of Diophantine Equations constitutes a large part of modern number theory, but it is a Diophantine Equation that Diophantus would not recognize.
