Abstract

In the past three years interscholastic competition for high school girls, basketball in particular, has been the subject of a good many lengthy discussions which I have experienced. The fact that I have found it such a controversial issue has prompted me to write my thesis on the effects of interscholastic competition on the high school participant. The example of interscholastic competition with which I am most familiar is the Maryville Tournament, an invitational high school basketball tournament held in St. Louis, Missouri, at Maryville College. Therefore, I sent a prepared questionnaire concerning interscholastic competition to the thirty-six schools who have participated, or who have been invited to participate, in the Maryville Tournament in the seventeen years since its inception. It is my belief that these schools, nine of which are out state, will provide me with a representative cross-section of faculty opinion on this subject.
