Abstract

The proposed thesis focuses on an issue of critical importance of small scale industries and the role played by the State Bank of India in financing these small scale industries. As a part of this thesis research, an extensive literature search was carried out in the area of small scale industries, with special emphasis on the methods of measuring, analyzing and understanding the procedures of financing small scale industries by the State Bank of India.

In the pre-independence period, small scale industry was a very neglected sector, but it attracted greater attention after independence. Small scale industries have an important role in India’s industrial development. It has been estimated that they contribute about 49% of the gross value of output originating in the manufacturing sector. These small scale industries have distinct socio-economic advantages.

In this study, I have considered the importance of small scale industries in the Indian economy, the financial assistance provided by the State Bank of India, problems faced by the bank in sanctioning the loans, as well as the problems faced by the small scale entrepreneurs in getting the loans, and programs set by the government and the State Bank of India.
