Description
Twins born in Sarajevo in 1988 to mixed marriage parents. Their father is Muslim and Mother is Catholic. They both have some memories of the war which include shelling, sheltering in a basement room, and avoiding snipers. They escaped the city in 93 or 94. They were told stories of how the bus was taken hostage by Serbs, but they were let go. They fled to Croatia to stay with their mothers aunt. From Craotia they went to Cologne, Germany where they stayed for the remainder of the war. Their father stayed to fight with the Army BiH, and Mirna reports that he felt like a stranger after the war. Instead of returning to Bosnia after the war, their parents decided that it would be best to move to the United States. They first came to Falls Church, VA and stayef for six months before moving to Bethesda, MD where their mothers counsing lived. They lived in Maryland for four years. They moved to St. Louis in 2000 because of a cheaper cost of living and large Bosnian community. Their mothers cousin lived in St. Louis. They speak Bosnian in the home. They had to help their parents a lot growing up with English. They consider themselves Bosnian first and are proud to be from Sarajevo.
