Abstract
Whether or not and when employees choose to smoke in the workplace has not been an issue in the past for most employers, because it was usually left up to thw employees discretion. However, in today's workplace policies are being drawn up telling the employees, when, where or if an employee can smoke. Most of all of the nonsmokers are in favor of a nonsmoking policy restricting smoking employees. And because of this split in thinking, problems have occurred in the workplace between smokers and nonsmokers. The problem does not stop there however. Companies are now being sued by nonsmokers for not having a safe and healthy place to work.
With more and more scientific data to back the nonsmokers up as to the health problems smoking and passive smoking can cause, companies have been put to the task of creating policies so as not to be charged in the willful act of not having a safe and healthy environment.
